Who must have a backflow test

The usual home cross connections are sprinkler systems, boilers, private wells and fire sprinkler systems. They count even when you are not using them, for example with the sprinklers turned off or a well sitting idle. An assembly must be tested at installation, repair or move, at least every year after that, after a backflow incident, and after an air gap is re-plumbed. Repeat failures and health hazards can mean tests more often than yearly.

Applies even if the sprinklers are turned off.

  • Fire sprinkler linesRequiredat least once a year

Anyone may repair or replace an assembly that protects a stand-alone fire system.

  • Homes (other than sprinklers)Someat least once a year

Only homes with a boiler or a private well. A well that is not in use still counts.
